Another Reason I love Gmail and GTalk

Just read on Mashable: gmail and gtalk finally came out with better emoticons!  I’m not big on using emoticons, but every once in a while I’ll throw in a heart, or a smiley face.  But they were ugly before.  Now they’ll be better when I do decide to use them!!  Is it weird that I’m excited over this??

Check this blog for a full recap of the Mixergy event, Strut Your Stuff.  It was really an awesome night and I am so glad I was able to be a part of it.  Thanks to Alex Funk and digital-telepathy for providing that opportunity for Monique and I.

Two Disappointments

I think I was on Mashable, or ReadWriteWeb?  Anyways, I came across Zenbe and Mint.  Zenbe is an aggregator and I was so excited to see that it had gmail, Yahoo, Twitter and Facebook.  I signed up immediately.  Strike one, my Yahoo account is not supported because I don’t have the premium version of the Yahoo email.  Strike two, it is very slow and when you scroll up and down in the Facebook status update section, the pictures seem static.  It takes them forever to catch up to the updates.  So when I’m looking and I see a picture of Jose Amador, I expect his status update to be next to it.  But no, it’s Chris Decatur’s.  Annoying.

Now onto Mint.  Not too much to complain about here, because I didn’t get very far on the website.  My bank isn’t supported on this website!!!!!  So sad.

This has been a weird day.  Normally I feel very tech savvy, and up to date with web 2.0..but, Monique and I couldn’t figure out how to analyze GoogleAdWords for a campaign at dt for the life of us, lastfm.com confused me and now I’m disappointed in Zenbe and Mint.  Someone give me a turnaround here.

My New Lifeline

I think everyone, even businesses (maybe not all businesses, but some) should sign up for a Twitter account.  Especially if you have a mobile device, it’s perfect.  Twitter is a microblogging system that lets you send 140 character updates to all of those in your Twitter network.

Tweet when you have a new blogpost, when you’re going out and want other people to meet up, when your company has a promotion going on, even when you’re in jail.  Wait, what?  Yep, Twitter actually saved a man from Egyptian Justice

Hopefully you won’t ever need to use Twitter for something that serious, but in the meantime I think it’s a great social networking tool that more people need to start adopting.

Me?  I work at a boutique hotel and also intern at a web design firm in San Diego, CA.  I’ve become extremely interested in social media [blogging, twitter, digg, mixx, and all of the other millions of social networking sites out there] and think that everyone (for business or personal reaons) can benefit from dabbling a little bit here and there in the crazy world of social media.

My blog won’t always be about social media and the like.  I plan on including my other interests in my posts also.  You’ll have to stay tuned to find out more.
